Stump grinding cost in Chattanooga

No Chattanooga tree company publishes stump prices (we checked every one that ranks, 2026-10-25), so these are national ranges from two guides, side by side. The figures assume an accessible stump in a yard; the Hamilton County factors that move them are below the table.

Per-inch pricing is why the ground-level measurement matters. A tree you remember as "about two feet across" at chest height usually has a 36-inch root flare, and that is what gets ground.

What pushes a Chattanooga stump quote up

  • Diameter at the ground The main driver. Root flare on a mature oak adds a foot or more over trunk diameter.
  • Access A crew-size grinder is a tracked or towed machine that needs a 36-inch gate or wider. Back yards on ridge lots with steps often mean a smaller walk-behind unit and more hours.
  • Species and age Oak, hickory and black locust are dense and slow to grind; pine, poplar and sweetgum go fast. Old stumps grind faster than fresh ones.
  • Rock and clay Chert and limestone are close to the surface on many Hamilton County hillsides. Rocks stop a grinder cold and dull the teeth — crews price for it.
  • Surface roots Grinding the stump does not remove the roots radiating from it. Chasing roots is an hourly extra.
  • Depth Standard is 4–6 inches below grade. Planting a new tree or pouring a slab needs deeper, which costs more.

What stump grinding includes — and what it doesn't

A standard job grinds the stump and the flare to 4–6 inches below ground level and leaves a mound of wood chips mixed with soil in the hole. That is the whole service unless you ask for more. Three things are routinely assumed and routinely not included:

  • Hauling the grindings. A 36-inch stump produces a surprising pile. Most crews leave it; hauling is $2–$4 per inch or a flat fee. Many homeowners rake it into beds as mulch instead.
  • Backfill and seed. The chip-and-soil mix settles for a year. If you want topsoil and grass seed the same day, ask and expect a small extra.
  • Roots. Grinding takes the stump, not the lateral roots. They rot in place over several years; if they are lifting a walkway, root removal is quoted hourly.

Grinding vs. full stump removal

Grinding is the default for a reason: it is fast, it leaves the yard intact, and the price above is the whole price. Full removal — digging or pulling the stump and the root ball out — is a different job. National guides quote digging at $80–$190 per stump plus a backhoe minimum of $150–$350, and the hole it leaves is large. It is the right call in two cases: you are building on the spot (a slab, footing or pool wall cannot sit on decaying wood), or the tree had a root disease you do not want to leave in the ground. Chemical stump rotting ($100–$200) works, but takes a year or more in Chattanooga's climate and still leaves a stump to deal with.

Before the grinder arrives

  1. Call 811. Grinders dig below grade, and gas, fiber and irrigation lines all run shallow. EPB's own guidance is to call 811 before any digging; the crew should ask whether you have.
  2. Clear a path. Measure the narrowest gate or gap between house and fence and tell the estimator; it decides which machine comes.
  3. Count every stump. The per-additional-stump rate ($30–$60) is the best deal in tree work. Old stumps at the back of the lot cost almost nothing to add.
  4. Decide about the chips. Saying "leave them" up front removes a line from the quote.

How matching works

Chattanooga Tree Pros connects you with an independent Chattanooga company that grinds stumps — some are full tree services, some do nothing but stumps and are cheaper for a stump-only job. We do not perform the work. Tell us how many stumps, the rough diameters, and whether a machine can reach them, and we route the request to a company that works your part of Hamilton County, TN.

Sources and dates

Every figure and rule above names where it came from and the date it was read. If a source disagrees with a quote you receive, the quote wins — it reflects your tree, your access, and this month's demand. Prices are rechecked at least every six months.

Stump grinding questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Chattanooga?

Standalone stump grinding runs $120–$400 for the first stump according to national guides read in October 2026 (Angi's average is $250), priced at $2–$6 per inch of diameter with a $80–$160 minimum. Additional stumps on the same visit are $30–$60 each.

How is stump diameter measured for a quote?

At the widest point at ground level, including the root flare — not the trunk diameter you remember from when the tree stood. A tree that was 24 inches across at chest height often measures 36 inches or more at the ground, which is why phone quotes and on-site quotes differ.

How deep does a stump grinder go?

Standard service grinds 4–6 inches below grade, enough to lay sod or mulch over. If you plan to plant a tree or pour concrete in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding (up to about 18 inches) and expect to pay more for it.

Will the stump grow back after grinding?

Oak, pine and most mature hardwoods will not. Bradford pear, sweetgum, mimosa, tree-of-heaven and black locust sucker from the remaining roots for a season or two; mowing the sprouts or treating the cut root ends handles it.

Can I rent a grinder and do it myself?

A rental runs $100–$400 per day nationally, so one or two small stumps can make sense if you have a truck and the stump is in the open. Rental units are far smaller than a crew's machine, a 36-inch oak stump will take most of a day, and buried utilities and rocks are the real risk — call 811 first.
