Tree trimming cost in Chattanooga
Local companies quote per job, not per hour, and none publishes a price list (checked 2026-10-25). These are the national ranges — the yardstick to judge a Chattanooga quote against for an accessible yard tree. Height drives the number: a climber has to get to every cut.
| Tree height | Typical cost | Chattanooga example |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 30 ft | $250–$700 | Crepe myrtle, dogwood, Japanese maple, young fruit tree |
| 30–60 ft | $600–$1,200 | Red maple, Bradford pear, mid-size pine, most street trees |
| More than 60 ft | $1,000–$2,500+ | Mature white oak, tulip poplar, hickory, loblolly pine |
| Minimum job charge | $100–$300+ | One small tree, or a single limb over the driveway |
| Debris hauling | $75–$250 | Usually separate; chips can stay as mulch |
National average $650 per tree; the full span runs from $80 for one quick cut to $2,500+ for an exceptionally large or neglected tree. Guides put summer and fall prices 10–20% above winter.

When to trim in Chattanooga
The Tennessee Valley has a long growing season and a short dormancy, and the timing rules follow from that:
- Oaks: dormant season only (roughly December–February here). Fresh pruning wounds in the growing season attract the beetles that spread oak wilt; late winter cuts close before they fly.
- Most other hardwoods — maple, poplar, hickory, sweetgum: late winter is ideal, early summer is acceptable once leaves harden. Maples "bleed" sap from late-winter cuts; it is harmless.
- Spring-flowering ornamentals — dogwood, redbud, crepe myrtle: prune right after bloom, or you cut off next year's flowers.
- Pines: there is little to prune. Dead lower limbs can come off any time; never cut back into bare wood expecting regrowth.
- Dead, broken or hazardous limbs: any day of the year, and sooner rather than later.
Trees near EPB lines
EPB prunes a minimum 10 feet of clearance around its primary distribution lines on a 5–6 year cycle and asks property owners to handle the service drop from the pole to the house. If the limbs you want trimmed are over the drop, the crew can work once EPB lowers it — EPB does that on request at no charge and reconnects afterward. If they are in or near the top line on the pole, stop: that is EPB's job and no tree company should touch it. The full who-does-what is on trees near EPB power lines.
Certified arborist, or tree service?
Neither the Tennessee contractor-licensing statute nor the Board's licence page names tree work (the state licence applies to projects of $25,000 or more, whatever the trade), and Chattanooga's ordinance requires registration and insurance, not a credential. The one credential that means something is ISA Certified Arborist — a tested, renewable certification from the International Society of Arboriculture that can be checked by name on the ISA's public lookup. For structural pruning of a tree you want to keep for decades, or for a diagnosis ("is this oak dying or just stressed?"), ask whether a certified arborist will be on site, and check the name. For clearance cuts and dead-wooding, an insured, experienced crew without the credential is fine. In both cases the insurance check comes first.
How matching works
Chattanooga Tree Pros is a referral service. We don't prune trees; we connect you with an independent Chattanooga company that does, and that company quotes and performs the work under its own name and insurance. Tell us the tree, the rough height, and what you want — clearance, a cleanup, a reduction, or an opinion — and we route it to a crew that works your part of Hamilton County, TN.
Sources and dates
Every figure and rule above names where it came from and the date it was read. If a source disagrees with a quote you receive, the quote wins — it reflects your tree, your access, and this month's demand. Prices are rechecked at least every six months.
