Tree Removal Cost in Chattanooga, TN: What It Runs by Size, and What Moves the Price
Tree removal in Chattanooga, TN typically costs $400–$1,200 per tree as of October 2026, based on national cost guides — about $500–$1,500 for a 30–60 ft yard tree and $1,200–$2,500+ for one over 80 ft. No Chattanooga company publishes a price list, so this page shows the ranges, what adds to them here, and how to read the quote you get.

Where these numbers come from (and why there is no "Chattanooga price list")
We read every Chattanooga tree company page that claims to talk about cost on October 25, 2026. None publishes a dollar range. One local company's "Fall 2025" cost guide lists factors and example scenarios without figures; another's cost page lists factors only. That is normal in this trade — a quote depends on the tree in front of the estimator — but it leaves homeowners with nothing to judge a number against.
So the ranges here are the national cost guides (HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor), read and dated, shown side by side so you can see the spread rather than one invented "average". The only Chattanooga-specific dollar figures on this page are the City's own permit fees, read from the ordinance text, and one aggregator's model estimate, labelled as such. Everything is rechecked by April 2027 at the latest.
Tree removal cost by height
Height is the first thing an estimator sizes up, because it drives climbing time, rigging, and how many pieces the tree comes down in. Two national guides, two ranges — if a Chattanooga quote lands inside either band for your tree's height, it is in the normal range.
| Tree height | HomeGuide (Feb 2026) | Angi / HomeAdvisor (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 ft (dogwood, redbud, young maple) | $200–$500 | $150–$450 |
| 30–60 ft (most mature yard oaks, poplars, pines) | $500–$1,500 | $450–$1,200 |
| 60–80 ft (large oak, hickory, mature pine) | $850–$2,000 | $800–$1,500 |
| Over 80 ft (tulip poplar, white oak, loblolly pine) | $1,200–$2,500+ | $1,000–$2,000 |
| National average, all sizes | $850 (typical $400–$1,200) | $750 (most pay $200–$2,000) |
For comparison only: Homeyou's model estimate for Chattanooga is $492–$671 per tree (October 2026). It is generated from a cost model, not from surveyed local quotes, which is why it sits below the guide ranges for anything but a small tree.
Trunk diameter matters almost as much as height. Guides note that trunks over 24 inches across cost significantly more than smaller ones at the same height, because every cut is heavier and the wood has to be lowered rather than dropped. A mature white oak or tulip poplar on an older Chattanooga lot often clears both thresholds — tall and thick — which is how a single tree ends up at the top of the over-80-ft band.
What pushes a Chattanooga quote up or down
The national ranges assume an average lot. Hamilton County is not an average lot. These are the factors a local estimator is actually pricing when they walk your yard:
Add-ons that show up as separate line items
A removal quote usually covers felling the tree and cutting it into manageable sections. Everything else is an add-on, and it is where two quotes for the same tree diverge. Ask for each of these in writing.
| Add-on | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stump grinding (bundled with removal) | $100–$150 first stump, $50 each additional | Standalone jobs run $120–$400; see the stump grinding page. |
| Debris hauling | about $70 | Brush and small limbs. Some crews include it; many don't. |
| Wood chipping | $50–$100 (Angi average $95) | Chips can usually be left as free mulch. |
| Log splitting for firewood | $50–$100 | Only worth it if you'll burn it. Oak and hickory split well; poplar burns fast. |
| Crane or bucket truck | $500 per day ($250–$600) | Trees over 80 ft, no drop zone, or structurally unsafe wood. |
| Travel outside service area | $0.50 per mile or $50–$200 flat | Rare inside Hamilton County; can apply to Sale Creek or the far end of Soddy-Daisy. |
| Hourly pricing (instead of a flat quote) | $100–$400+ per hour | Common for storm cleanup where the scope isn't known up front. |
Fallen trees, emergency calls, and storm pricing
A tree that has already come down in an open part of the yard is the cheapest removal there is — national guides quote $75–$150 plus hauling, or $300–$500 to cut it up and haul it off, because nobody has to climb. The same tree resting on a roof, a fence line or a car is a different job: the trunk is under tension, the crew needs rigging to lift it off without a second collapse, and it is usually happening at night or in rain.
If a neighbor's tree fell onto your property, the question of who pays has a Tennessee-specific answer — read Tennessee neighbor-tree law before you assume either way.
Permit costs in Chattanooga — usually zero for a homeowner
The Chattanooga Tree Ordinance was rewritten in April 2025 (Ord. No. 14217). Its permit requirement applies to trees on City streets, parks and other City-owned property, and Sec. 32-316(a)(1) expressly exempts any parcel "currently being used for a single-unit dwelling or two-unit dwelling" from the private-property tree rules. A tree in your own yard needs no City permit and no fee, with one exception: a tree designated Notable by the Tree Commission, or on the State Champion, Landmark or Historic lists, needs a Tree Ordinance Permit before removal or heavy pruning (Sec. 32-317).
When a permit does apply — a tree in the right-of-way strip between sidewalk and curb, say — the ordinance sets the fee in three tiers: $100 (Tier 1, residents doing non-construction work on a public tree), $250 (Tier 2, removal tied to a building or simple land-disturbing permit), and $500 (Tier 3, complex land disturbance). The City's permit web page quotes the $500 figure and calls it non-refundable. Removing a public tree that isn't dead, diseased or hazardous also triggers replanting inch-for-inch or a Tree Replacement Fee of $200 per inch of trunk diameter. Details, with the ordinance text quoted, are on the Chattanooga tree permit rules page.
How to get a quote you can trust
- Get two or three written estimates that each state height, what is included (felling, sectioning, hauling, stump) and what is not.
- Ask for the certificate of insurance — general liability and workers' compensation — before the crew arrives, not after. The verification walkthrough shows how to check it in ten minutes.
- Check the licence threshold. Tennessee requires a state contractor's licence for projects of $25,000 or more. Almost no residential tree job gets there, but a multi-tree lot clearing can; if your total approaches it, ask the company for its licence number and confirm it with the TN Board for Licensing Contractors.
- Decide what you keep. Telling the estimator up front that chips can stay and logs can be left cut-to-length removes two line items.
- Bundle. National guides show a 10–25% per-tree reduction when several trees come out in one visit, because the equipment is already on site.
Will insurance pay?
Insurance is policy-specific, and nothing on this page is insurance advice. The general pattern homeowners run into: policies treat a tree that damaged a covered structure differently from a tree that simply fell in the yard, and preventive removal of a standing tree is rarely covered. Call your carrier before signing a removal contract, photograph everything first, and keep the estimate — the emergency page has the photo checklist adjusters ask for.
Sources and dates
Every figure and rule above names where it came from and the date it was read. If a source disagrees with a quote you receive, the quote wins — it reflects your tree, your access, and this month's demand. Prices are rechecked at least every six months.
